Vote to fight spring hunger with Walmart April 9 -30, 2012. More then 50 million Americans don't know where their next meal will come from. With unemployment rates still incredibly high, many people will go hungry. Spring is particularly hard, since donations tend to slow down at food banks. You can help, it's easy with Walmart's new campaign to fight hunger. Between April 9-30, head to Walmart's Facebook page here to Vote to fight spring hunger with Walmart. You will be voting for your favorite community out of 200 with the highest unemployment rates.
Walmart will be donating a total of 2 million to the 21 communities that receive the most votes and support! One million dollars to the first place winner, and $50,000 to each of the 20 runner up communities. Winners will be announced May 1, 2012. The initiative is expected to generate 43,000 meals for those in need.
I will be voting for Bakersfield which is on the list. I grew up in Bakersfield, graduated from CSUB, and have lots of family and friends there, including my father who is currently unemployed and struggling to find work in todays economy. You can also shop at Walmart between those same dates and make a difference too. By purchasing select products from ConAgra, General Mills, Kraft, and Kellogg's, customers can donate meals to Feeding America or Action for Healthy Kids, a nonprofit fighting childhood hunger. Walmart stores will have in-store signage and packaging to make your purchases for a good cause easier.
